Xmas in Bilbao
The beginning of the holidays in Bilbao is marked by Santo Tomás´fair, taking place on December 21st. in all cities and villages. Farmers from the region sell their best products in this fair dating from the XIXth cent. Hundreds of producers and thousands of visitors gather in the area between the Arenal and the Plaza Nueva in the city´s old town.
Basque mythology has its own Santa Claus, the Olentzero, a coalman who, while working in the mountains receives the news of Christ´s birth and goes to the villages to spread the news. In today´s popular culture it is represented by a pipe-smoking old man who descends the chimneys on Dec. 24th to leave gifts and sometimes coal. Visitors spending the holidays in Bilbao may enjoy the traditional Olentzero parade on Christmas eve, with traditional music, songs and candy.
Traditional turrón (Christmas nougat delicacy) is also a must in Bilbao. The historic Turronería Ivañez founded in 1860 and located in the old town, offers all the traditional sweets of the season, perfect for enjoying on-site or taking back home as a souvenir.
Discovering Pintxos around town
Pintxos are one of the main gastronomic attractions of the city. Typical of the city, our version of the tapa is served on top of a slice of bread, cold or warm...both delicious!
The main areas for trying pintxos are the old town (Casco Viejo), and Diputación and García Rivero Streets.
