With an international airport designed by Santiago Calatrava and direct flights to international destinations such as Amsterdam and Munich, Bilbao is an excellent springboard for getting to know unforgettable cities.
Here are some of our suggestions:
Getxo and fishing villages
Just 20 minutes from Bilbao you will find a lovely residential area near the sea. With stately mansions from the early 20th century; the extraordinary Hanging Bridge (Puente Colgante), which is a UNESCO world heritage site; and the Old Port, a picturesque fishing port painted in bright colours.
Continuing along the coast you will reach Mundaka beach, known worldwide by surf lovers for its waves, and charming fishing villages such as Bermeo, Elantxobe or Lekeitio. It is unlikely you have tasted fish this fresh.
Distance by car: approximately 1 1/4 hours
San Sebastian and southern France
Along with Bilbao, San Sebastian has the most Michelin stars outside of France. It is a lovely and chic coastal city.
When you cross the border, be sure not to miss majestic Biarritz, where you can enjoy a day of shopping and the beach. St. Jean de Luz, a charming and bucolic fishing village where you can enjoy a pleasant meal outdoors and a walk along the port, is located nearby.
Distance by car: approximately 1 hour to San Sebastian, 1 1/2 hours to France
